CHAPTER NINE

Outside, we stepped to the side, out of the sight from Barry. My shallow breath felt like I had run a marathon.

I bent over, gasping. “Mom, what were you thinking?” I asked and looked over my shoulder to make sure Barry wasn’t following us.

“Tilly, loosen up. I may have found something,” she said.

I guided her to the car. “Let’s go have coffee,” I suggested. Although I certainly didn’t need any caffeine to amp up my nerves.

We got into the car and buckled up. It felt a bit embarrassing to be driving a few blocks at a time. And I could have benefited from the physical release of my stress. I gripped the notebook in my lap, glad I had at least gotten some information in order to make a decision. Any further time in Ceramics World, especially with my mom, might just get us permanently banned from the place. And truthfully, the first set we looked at was exactly what I was looking for. The simple colors, navy blue and white, were clean and classic. And the price was right.

“Tilly, I haven’t had that much fun in I can’t remember how long,” Mom said, grinning from ear to ear.

Maybe there was no harm in her doing what she did. I could only imagine the stories she would be telling her friends when she got back home. Her perspective about Belle Harbor had definitely changed, at least for the time being.

I pointed to the left, directing her into a parking spot near Mocha Joe’s Coffee Shop.

“You about gave me a heart attack,” I said.

Mom turned off the car and bounded out, looking around like she was ready to take on any challenge that came her way.

Holding my notebook to my chest, I intended to focus her on our original mission: decorating the cafe. In her excitement of the moment, she seemed to entirely forget what we needed to do.

As she sped toward Mocha’s Joe’s I couldn’t help being pleased. This experience with my mom was like no other we ever had. Frankly, if I closed my eyes I could totally picture my friend Fiona doing exactly what my mom did.

“Tilly, this trip has turned out much better than I thought,” she said.

I followed her into the store as we joined the end of the line. There was never a time this place wasn’t packed. Thankfully, Joe had a top-notch team who were incredibly fast with excellent customer service. It wasn’t long before we were at the counter.

“Tilly, so good to see you,” Joe said. “My treat for you and your mom. Anything you want.” He swept his arm toward the menu on the wall. Holding out his hand to shake Mom’s, he continued, “We haven’t officially met. I’m Joe Harrington, owner.”

Mom looked at me, grinning. I knew that expression.

“Thank you,” I said, sure my face was now bright red. Although it wouldn’t be the first time I had blushed in Joe’s presence.

“We’ve had quite the morning. Doing some investigation. If you know what I mean,” Mom said to Joe.
